My name is Nancy Mitchell and I grew up in Los Angeles, California in the early 1970's. My mother taught Design at Art Center College of Design and my father ran his own family business. My senior year of high school, my mother became very ill with leukemia and was given 3 months to live.
During this time, I did not know any one with cancer nor anyone with any other chronic diseases for that matter. It was a shock for all of us and I began learning and researching everything I could about cancer and health. Remember, this was pre Google which meant looking up books in the library and reading articles.
I became involved with Shoalin Kung Fu which led me to energy work, tonic herbs and the power of the mind/body connection.
I began doing regular energy work on my mother. She also began doing visualization exercises where she imagined her body fighting the cancer and becoming stronger. She ate colorful foods, mostly plants. After about a year, she was declared cancer -free and she is still alive today. This was my first glimpse into the power of the body as well as the mind.
I received my bachelors degree in Sociology at UCLA as well as my nursing degree at California State University, Los Angeles in early 2000.
I began working at UCLA in the cardiology post surgical unit. I met some of my dearest friends and colleagues while caring for some of the sickest patients undergoing heart and lung transplants, bypass grafts, valve replacements, and complex lung and throat surgeries.
I eventually moved to San Diego and began working in the clinic as a triage nurse where I learned the true chronicity of these diseases and the little to no information patients receive to treat the cause of their condition. Basic information about diet, foods to include, why to include them, and their impact on the body was not only missing in patient education but also on my own education. How could I expect providers to be teaching information they did not know themselves.
After several years, I went back to UCLA for further education and to become a provider. I moved to Oahu, Hawaii where I could match my lifestyle goals of eating fresh foods, getting daily sunlight, swimming and hiking in nature several times a week, and participating in native culture could become a reality. I initially started a job in Gastroenterology where I was immersed into the world of GI dysfunction. I found that providers were not discussing the basic foundations of gut problems, diet. I began doing my own research on how best to support the body to overcome these common GI conditions that prompt clinic visits. I began teaching my patients basic practices of healthy eating such as green juice, smoothies, and supplements to support their body to heal.
The results were remarkable!
I found that simple additions to the diet could profoundly change people's health. These were not cures (for some they were) but were wonderful additions to get the healing process jump started in the body. It was also beneficial for those with more advanced chronic diseases to adjunct their medical therapy with less side effects and have better results.
This is not either/or, wherever you are on your healing journey, using basic tweaks in the diet, adding supplementation, meditation, assessing and changing beliefs can make profound changes in how you feel and how your body functions.
And above all, gratitude for where you are, the lessons the body provides and to the community we live in to help us grow and become better beings is the foundation of...
